Ottawa Senators centre Jason Spezza, who currently earns a paltry $5 million each season for playing a strong third fiddle in a chamber-group featuring high-flying Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley, agreed to a $49 million, seven-year contract extension Friday. The 24-year-old would have been a restricted free agent after this season but will now be with the team through 2014-15. “This is a good situation for Jason,” said his agent, Rick Curran, in perhaps the greatest understatement ever. Spezza has contributed a goal and 12 assists in 10 games to help spot Ottawa to a 10-1-0 start. But he’s also got a pulled groin that’s listed as day to day. With 2 mill more to schlep around in his pockets each season it might take a while to heal.
